On July 26, 2025, the Climate Policy Institute proudly co-organized the “Cigarette Butt-Free Esztergom” campaign, an environmental cleanup initiative that combined public awareness, citizen engagement, and urban sustainability in a meaningful and results-driven way. The event was part of the Plastic-Free July global movement, and held in collaboration with the City of Esztergom, Esztergom Tourism Nonprofit Ltd., local civic groups, and with support from B+N Referencia Zrt.
As an institute dedicated to environmental responsibility and long-term climate-conscious policymaking, we at the Climate Policy Institute view events like this not just as local actions, but as vital examples of grassroots environmental stewardship.
Why Cigarette Butts?
Cigarette butts are among the most commonly littered waste items worldwide, yet their environmental impact is often underestimated. Each cigarette filter can contain up to 7,000 toxic substances, many of which leach into the soil or enter waterways, polluting ecosystems and threatening biodiversity.
That’s why, as co-organizers, our goal was twofold: Physically remove cigarette litter from Esztergom’s urban environment, particularly the city center and raise awareness about the dangers of improper cigarette waste disposal and empower citizens to be part of the solution.
A Shared Responsibility, A Cleaner Future
The “Cigarette Butt-Free Esztergom” event is proof that environmental action doesn’t require complex solutions, just coordination, commitment, and care. By helping organize this initiative, we brought together individuals, families, and institutions under one common mission: to leave our urban spaces cleaner and more sustainable for future generations.
We thank every volunteer, partner, and citizen who joined us. With actions like this, the path to a greener, more conscious Hungary becomes ever more achievable.
Together, we clean. Together, we change.
